Handplanes

Wooden Bodysurfing Handplanes – Custom Made in Wales UK

Bodysurfing can make riding waves more accessible and our natural use of objects to enhance our experiences has driven the creation of bodysurfing handplanes.

Handplanes are miniature surfboards used and controlled by the hand to increase your body planing surface area and directional control.

Sakura Workshop produces handmade wooden bodysurfing handplanes inspired by the cherry blossom petal and cherry tree leaf; the former having a concave underside and the latter channels, both of which create lift and rails to assist directional control.

Bodysurfing

Bodysurfing
Body surfing can make riding waves more accessible regardless of ability or experience; and with a few simple techniques and safety points you can get riding.
Body surfing is the art of catching a wave and riding it to the shore using the most technical piece of equipment we have - our own body.
Our natural use of objects to enhance our experiences has driven the creation and use of body surf handplanes and swim fins.

Technique
To catch a wave position yourself in the breaking waves with the waves breaking at an angle and not crashing down all at once.
Stand in waist to chest depth water so that when you are ready to catch a wave you can push off of the sea bed and start to paddle and kick towards the shore to get yourself on to the face of the wave.
You will be aiming to get your head and shoulders below your hips and legs with your arms stretched out in front of you, this will get gravity working and with the force of the wave you should start sliding down the face of the wave; you can stop paddling around this point.
Once this happens you will feel the acceleration down the wave and you will be able to raise your head and shoulders; using your hand with the attached handplane and chest as your planning surface.
Look up and enjoy the view!
